7% Hypertonic Saline Solution

Hypertonic saline is a saltwater solution with a higher concentration of salt than normal saline or body fluids. It can be nebulized for inhalation to help clear mucus from the airways in various respiratory conditions like COPD or cystic fibrosis.

Hypertonic saline draws water from the tissues into the airways, thinning mucus and making it easier to cough up. This process improves mucociliary clearance, allowing patients to breathe more comfortably while reducing the risk of infection. 

Common side effects of hypertonic saline include cough, chest tightness, bronchospasm, and a temporary increase in sputum production. Most side effects are mild and resolve quickly after treatment. Always ask your doctor if it’s safe to use hypertonic saline with your specific condition and health history.

Yes, hypertonic saline can be used in combination with other inhaled medications, like bronchodilators or mucolytics. However, it’s essential to follow the proper sequence of administration and timing as directed by your healthcare provider. Medications like albuterol are generally taken after the hypertonic saline to relieve any airway irritation.

Hypertonic saline isn’t recommended for asthma unless your doctor specifically prescribes it and gives you the okay. It can be irritating for people with serious asthma.

Just open the sterile vial (make sure not to touch the tip so there’s no contamination), pour it into your nebulizer, and complete your breathing treatment like normal. If you’re using a mesh nebulizer, run a few mL of distilled water after the treatment to remove residue from the mesh.

Hypertonic saline should be stored at room temperature. Avoid extreme cold or extreme heat. Do not use if the vial has been opened or damaged. Do not save unused saline after the vial has been opened.
